About the Play

Based on a true story, AIRPORT INSECURITY is the quirky, entertaining, Kafkaesque tale of an Indian techie stuck at Frankfurt Airport without a passport, visa, or mobile phone. Over forty-eight hours in the airport lounge, he encounters a diverse cast of characters while navigating a bureaucratic labyrinth. The resolution of his troubles surprises everyone, even him. AIRPORT INSECURITY is the first of four productions in Naatak's 2017 Season.

About the Play

Winner of the Obie award for Best New American play in 2010, Annie Baker's play is about an unlikely collection of strangers who sign up for a community center "Adult Creative Drama” class. As the class unfolds in a series of harmless theater games, hearts are quietly torn apart, and tiny wars of epic proportions are waged and won. “By the play’s end, we seem to see to the very bottom of these souls...” - The New York Times. A beautifully crafted diorama, the play has made it to the Top Ten Lists of The New York Times and The New Yorker. Circle Mirror Transformation will be Naatak's first UpClose production of 2017 and will be presented in a community center placing the audience in the midst of the actors and the action.

What Are We Looking For

1.Stage presence and ability to emote. We will be 3 feet away from the audience so our performances need to be very real and believable. 2. Clean diction. The characters marked as Indian-American are either born or raised in the United States. Conversely, characters marked Indian have been raised in urban India. They must sound that way.

Show Details

We will perform Circle Mirror Transformation in a few locations between Cupertino, Pleasanton and San Francisco. The venue will be a large room in a community center - similar to the one where the play itself is set. We will do between 3 to 5 shows, with approximately a hundred audience members expected in each show.

Rehearsal Schedule

We will rehearse the play over 5 weeks with about 3 rehearsals every week, spread across week nights and weekends.

Crew Member Signups

Naatak UpClose productions will be minimalistic in nature but we do need help in sourcing/creating props and costumes, as well as with visual design and videography. If you are interested in helping out, please reach out to auditions@naatak.org

About the Play

It is 1948. The governments of India and Pakistan decide that, as has happened with the rest of their population, lunatics in their mental asylums must be exchanged. Muslim lunatics in India are to be sent to Pakistan, while Hindu and Sikh lunatics in Pakistan will be sent to India. In an asylum in Lahore, a Sikh lunatic whom everyone calls Toba Tek Singh refuses to go. Based on Saadat Hasan Manto’s celebrated short story, TOBA TEK SINGH is a grand musical – performed with live music and dance, fascinating sets and costumes – that observes the madness of Partition through the eyes of a madman, and lays bare its agony through humor, tragedy, and the silly antics of lunatics. TOBA TEK SINGH is the second of four productions in Naatak's 2017 Season. This will be the largest production in Naatak's 22-year history. There will be as many as 50 people on stage performing 9 shows at Woodside High School.
